Late on Saturday night, Brian Mayo was the victim of assault that left him with serious injuries. He was admitted to Royal Inland Hospital, where doctors performed emergency surgery to address significant swelling and bleeding in his brain. They inserted two drains, one to relieve the pressure and the other to drain the bleed.
We are incredibly grateful to share that the surgery went well, but Bri now faces a long and uncertain road to recovery. At this time, it’s unknown when he’ll be able to return to work, and the weeks ahead will require rest, rehabilitation, and the full support of everyone who knows and loves the Mayo family.
We are setting up this GoFundMe for everyone who is asking how they can help. Right now, the best way to practically and meaningfully support them is by easing the financial stress of household bills for an indeterminate amount of time, and the approaching Christmas season.
Your contribution will allow the Mayo family to focus on the most important things: time together, stability for the kids, and Brian’s healing journey.
Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. Your support means everything.
Updates
Sunday 23rd:
Brian made it out of surgery and into recovery. His vitals and neurological checks looked good, and the team monitored swelling closely. He was sleepy but responding well, opening his eyes more with each check. By the evening he was awake enough to chat with Laura, Kenz, and family — even remembering playing pool from the night before. Everyone was relieved and encouraged by these early signs.
Monday 24th:
Brian had a CT scan that showed improvement. He was able to rest well, talk clearly, sit up, eat, and even spend some time in a chair. Physio noted strong progress, and he was alert enough to tackle a crossword.
Tuesday 25th:
One of the drains was removed, and the care team was very happy with his cognitive responses. He had some expected confusion about the time of day, but other neurological parameters were stable and improving. The neurosurgeon planned to monitor swelling over the next couple of days before removing the final pressure-relief drain.
Wednesday 26th:
Brian was able to get out of bed, eat a snack, and joke with family. Pain was present but manageable with oral medication. Doctors continued to be pleased with his progress.
Thursday 27th:
He had a huge milestone, all remaining drains and equipment were removed due to his ongoing stability. Brian even walked on his own. He was later transferred out of the ICU.
Friday 28th:
Brian’s vitals remained steady, but pain was significantly higher, and he struggled with sleep and nausea. Doctors ordered another CT as a precaution. By afternoon, his pain began to come down with medication, and the scan revealed only bruising, nothing concerning. He continues to rest and focus on healing.
Saturday 29th:
Pain has increased overnight and persists this morning. Laura stayed at the hospital overnight to be with Brian.
Back at their house friends are helping to load up the Mayos with firewood to heat their home over winter. To all of you who have sent messages from afar, arrived in person, been praying and pulling for Bri - thank you.
