I’m writing this for Erika because right now she is lying in a hospital bed recovering from spinal surgery, and even if she were physically able to write this herself, she never would. Asking for help is not who she is. Our family is still trying to process how a normal workday turned into a life-changing trauma.

One moment she was working, and the next she fell through the floor and landed hard on her legs, her body taking the full impact. In seconds, everything changed.

The fall caused devastating injuries to Erika’s spine and right leg. She was rushed into major surgery where doctors had to stabilize her spine with screws and hardware. In order to perform the surgery, part of a rib had to be removed. Hearing the words “spinal surgery” connected to someone you love is terrifying. Watching it happen is something we will never forget.

We thought the surgery would be the hardest part. It wasn’t.

After surgery, Erika developed serious complications. Fluid began filling her lungs and rib cage, making it difficult for her to breathe. She had to undergo another procedure just to drain the fluid and stabilize her condition. There were moments when all we could do was pray she could breathe comfortably again.

The surgery itself was successful, and we are deeply grateful for that. Erika remains hospitalized under deep monitoring and observation due to the trauma her body has endured. Her doctors are watching her closely, knowing her recovery requires constant care. What lies ahead is a long and painful road filled with rehabilitation, limited mobility, and time away from work. Her right leg injury makes even the simplest movements difficult.

But Erika is so much more than this accident.

Erika is a mother first, always putting her children before herself. She is a sister who shows up no matter what time or what the need is. She is a grandmother whose face lights up the moment she’s around her grandkids, the kind who gives endless hugs and makes everyone feel safe. She is also a best friend — the one people call when life gets hard, when they need advice, or when they just need someone to sit with them.

She is the person who checks in on others before anyone thinks to check on her. The one who works hard without complaint and carries more than she ever lets on. She has spent her life taking care of everyone else. Now, she needs help being taken care of.

Although this accident happened while Erika was working, there is no workers’ compensation coverage. That means the medical bills, hospital stays, recovery equipment, and everyday living expenses fall entirely on her and our family at a time when she cannot work at all. We want to remain respectful and avoid naming the employer, but it’s important to be honest about why help is so urgently needed.

The funds raised will go directly to Erika to help cover medical and hospital expenses, rehabilitation and physical therapy, an adjustable bed and recovery equipment so she can heal safely at home, and basic living expenses while she is unable to work.

Pedir ayuda no es parte de quien ella es. Nuestra familia todavía está tratando de asimilar cómo un día normal de trabajo se convirtió en un trauma que cambió su vida por completo.

En un instante, mientras trabajaba, Erika cayó a través del piso y aterrizó con fuerza sobre sus piernas, recibiendo todo el impacto en su cuerpo. En cuestión de segundos, todo cambió.

La caída le causó heridas devastadoras en la columna y en la pierna derecha. Fue llevada de urgencia a una cirugía mayor donde los médicos tuvieron que estabilizar su columna con tornillos y placas. Para poder realizar la cirugía, fue necesario remover parte de una costilla. Escuchar que alguien que amas necesita una cirugía de columna es aterrador. Vivirlo de cerca es algo que nunca olvidaremos.

Pensamos que la cirugía sería la parte más difícil. No lo fue.

Después de la cirugía, Erika presentó complicaciones graves. Comenzó a acumularse líquido en sus pulmones y en la cavidad del pecho, lo que le dificultaba respirar. Tuvo que someterse a otro procedimiento para drenar el líquido y estabilizar su condición. Hubo momentos en los que lo único que podíamos hacer era rezar para que pudiera respirar con normalidad nuevamente.

La cirugía fue exitosa, y estamos profundamente agradecidos por eso. Erika continúa hospitalizada bajo monitoreo y observación constante debido al trauma que su cuerpo ha sufrido. Los médicos la vigilan muy de cerca, ya que su recuperación requiere atención continua. Lo que viene ahora es un camino largo y doloroso, lleno de rehabilitación, movilidad limitada y tiempo sin poder trabajar. La lesión en su pierna derecha hace que incluso los movimientos más simples sean difíciles.

Pero Erika es mucho más que este accidente.

Erika es, ante todo, una madre que siempre pone a sus hijos primero. Es una hermana que siempre está presente, sin importar la hora o la situación. Es una abuela amorosa, cuya cara se ilumina al ver a sus nietos, la que da abrazos infinitos y hace que todos se sientan seguros. También es una mejor amiga — la persona a la que todos llaman cuando la vida se pone difícil, cuando necesitan un consejo o simplemente alguien que esté ahí.

Ella es quien siempre se preocupa por los demás antes de que alguien se preocupe por ella. La que trabaja duro sin quejarse y carga mucho más de lo que deja ver. Ha pasado su vida cuidando de los demás. Ahora, necesita que la cuiden a ella.

Aunque este accidente ocurrió mientras Erika estaba trabajando, no existe cobertura de compensación laboral. Esto significa que todos los gastos médicos, las estancias en el hospital, el equipo de recuperación y los gastos básicos del día a día recaen completamente sobre ella y nuestra familia, en un momento en el que no puede trabajar. Queremos ser respetuosos y no mencionar al empleador, pero también es importante ser honestos sobre por qué la ayuda es tan necesaria.

Los fondos recaudados serán entregados directamente a Erika para ayudar a cubrir gastos médicos y hospitalarios, rehabilitación y terapia física, una cama ajustable y equipo de recuperación para que pueda sanar de forma segura en casa, y los gastos básicos mientras no pueda trabajar.
