“A sister is God’s way of making sure we never walk alone.”
On Friday, November 29, 2024, the day after Thanksgiving, after weeks of appointments and testing, my beautiful, strong, baby sister uttered three words that changed our entire family’s lives forever.
“I have cancer.”
It probably goes without saying, as many siblings are, but Alexandra (Al to me, Allie to our family, Alex to friends, and most importantly, Auntie Sissy to my two babies who look to her as a second mom) and I are truly best friends. Raised in a single parent home, it was always the three of us - mom, Al, and me. I often had to (and still have to be) reminded by Al that I am her sister and not her mother. That’s the level of love that only a sister can have for her sister.
Our lives have been filled with many hardships, especially when our mother became permanently disabled, but, as long as we had each other, we could get through anything, together.
Even with all of the ups and downs we have faced, NOTHING could have prepared us for Alexandra’s breast cancer diagnosis at only 34 years young.
Test after test, consultation after consultation, the true journey begins tomorrow, January 9, 2025. Alexandra will have approximately 6 months of chemotherapy, followed by surgery, followed by radiation for an unknown duration of time.
After careful consideration, NYU’s Perlmutter Cancer Center has been selected for treatment. While being in, what we believe to be, the best hands, the expenses that come with treatment are great, and I am humbly asking for any help to assist in off setting this financial burden for my sister.
Alexandra is currently working full-time and will continue to throughout treatment, as she is a single person who shares a home with our mother and helps to pay the mortgage. In addition to her full-time career, Alexandra tutors several children after work and will be unable to do so during treatment, as she will be immunocompromised.
There has already been so much money spent to get to the place we are at today - supplies for chemo, a custom wig for when she loses her hair, copays, gas, tolls - the list seems endless. In addition, on Christmas Eve morning, Alexandra was in a car accident and has a deductible to pay in order to repair her car, which has $7,000 in damages.
If you know my sister, you know that she is STRONG and STUBBORN! She refused to make a GoFundMe or accept the help people are offering her, which is why I am making this for her. Alexandra would literally give the shirt off her back, but won’t accept the help she so deserves in this fight. She is a fighter, just like our mama. A true warrior. I am asking for help on behalf of Alexandra, so that she can focus on fighting cancer and not have to fight to stay on top of her financial responsibilities.
If you are able to, please consider donating. Any amount will help.
Please say a prayer for my sister and for our entire family, that we may all have the strength to endure the unknown path on which we will travel.
Thank you and God Bless us all.
