Stop Assembly Bill 1775 !

StopAB1775.org is appealing to you to help us fight this well-intentioned but clinically misguided law that turns therapists into police and actually compounds the problem it seeks to curtail.

* AB1775, which went into effect on January 1, 2015, calls for all mandated reporters in the state of California to report anyone who views obscene images of minors.

  * AB1775 conflates viewing obscene pictures of minors with contact offenses against minors, even when considerable research demonstrates this is not the case.

    * AB1775 restricts the way therapy is conducted. Viewing porn should be dealt with in psychotherapy, not by punitive laws.

     * AB1775 makes teenage “sexting” reportable under the law.  Already, 39% of sex offenders in California are under the age of 18.

     * AB1775  effectively eliminates therapy as an option for those who view obscene pictures of minors.

   * AB1775 will add thousands of clients without previous criminal histories to an already overburdened court system.

We have already spent many thousands of dollars on attorney fees out of our own pockets. Your funds will help us press forward with the Petition for Writ of Prohibitory Mandate already filed against the State of California’s enforcement of AB1775, entitled Mathews, Alvarez  and Owens vs. the State of California.  It will help us fund the cost of our website (StopAB1775.org ) in order to raise professional and public  awareness, reach out to the media and ultimately, restore the bedrock of patient-client confidentiality.
