STEPHANIE’S RECOVERY QUEST
I am trying to raise $50,000 for my 32-year-old niece Stephanie Vollick-Thoreson who had brain surgery January 2018. The funds would go towards her occupational and physiotherapy, a psychologist, securing her benefit plan, and to help make the student loan payments until she is able to be healthy enough to go back to her job full time. Stephanie so loves her job as a Youth Services Librarian at the Vernon BC library; where she engages the children from this community in role-playing, reading activities and other learning opportunities. She is an incredibly intelligent individual who sets the bar to a level we could only hope to achieve.
Stephanie’s Story
Stephanie put herself through a university undergraduate degree in English and then a Masters in Library and Information Science. Six years of student loans.
Stephanie felt so fortunate to land the job of her dreams as a Youth Services Librarian. She participates in medieval re-enactment in her personal life and brings this imaginative play to her work by dressing in her own quirky way for any of her Harry Potter, Star Wars or fairy tale story time themes, engaging the children to the very lengths of their imaginations.

Stephanie was diagnosed with a brain tumor Nov 2017 after suffering seizures and headaches for many years. Her surgery was on January 24th of this year. Due to the severity and size of the tumor a main artery was severed and she suffered a bleed during the surgery.

Today, Stephanie still suffers with occasional seizures, partially controlled with medication; and struggles with a deficit of short-term memory, inability to multi-task, overwhelming fatigue, constant headaches, and issues with numerous cognitive functions that we would take for granted.
Stephanie’s Dilemma
Due to both her financial situation and her passion for her work, Stephanie returned to work 6 months earlier than recommended by her specialist.
Due to the limited number of hours she works per week she must pay out of pocket for her benefit package. The benefit package does not include all the medical treatment necessary for her recovery plan. In addition, many of the benefits included are at their threshold limit. Her wellness plan includes the treatments from a psychologist, specialized massage therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapists. Then there are her medications. Right now, she is in 8 months arrears in paying for her benefits.
She has applied to the provincial government for student loan forgiveness, but was denied. Although they have reduced the amount to be paid monthly, it is irrelevant since she does not have the income to cover her loan payment unless she forgoes her portion of payment for her treatment.
Stephanie’s Quest
Stephanie wants to be independent and go back to working full time once she has recovered from the trauma of her brain tumor surgery. Her recent assessment and prognosis for the future is good, but she needs time to heal and continue her wellness plan without the stress of paying for her treatments and student loans. Since returning to work on reduced hours she is unable to cope with daily activities, and she is often confused and exhausted in her workplace. Stephanie’s quest is to provide herself with the necessary stress-free recovery period and treatments so that she can return to her dream job, working at her full potential with the children in her community.
My Appeal
I am asking that if you have 5 or 10 dollars you can spare to donate for Stephanie’s wellness it would be so greatly appreciated. I am trying to give her a stress-free clear head, so her brain can have the time it needs to heal.
