Standing Strong with Dan Labre
In August of 2020, what started out as Dan "feeling a little under the weather", being tired, and having a cough, ended up being the diagnosis no one wants to hear. Cancer.
Dan was diagnosed with Small Cell Lung Cancer. Small Cell Lung Cancer is an aggressive form of cancer because it can grow quickly and as the disease advances, it may spread to the other lung or to other parts of the body. Also, for many people with SCLC, the cancer can spread soon after diagnosis regardless of treatment received or offered. Immediately he started treatment which shrunk the cancer and relieved his symptoms, and gave him more hope of fighting this aggressive disease, in his already positive state of mind.
Because of his strength and determination, no matter what hurdle he has faced, he is now being referred to as Rocky, after having to fight so hard over the last year, and showing us all his courage and positivity. He amazes us all every single day.
Sadly, approximately two weeks ago, when going for a follow-up scan, they discovered the cancer had metastasized to the stem of his brain. Although he has resumed radiation in hopes to relieve swelling, discomfort and shrink the spots they have seen, we still do not know just how far it may have spread. What we do know, is his time with us is limited.
Dan is an amazing husband and father, a proud grandfather, son, brother, friend... and so, so much more. As we all know, Dan is full of life and always willing to help those he can, however he can, to anyone in his circle.
As you can imagine, it's a time of much difficulty for my friend Joanne, Dan's wife, and his family. Dan has not been able to work in over a year and his medical benefits are running out come July. Therefore they will no longer have medical coverage to provide Dan with medications & care aids that he will need as comfort measures, as this disease progresses. They also anticipate struggling to be able to maintain "normal life" expenses. That's why I, Brenda (Joanne and Dan's long time friend), along with their family, am launching this fundraiser as an effort to make sure they have extra funds for anything they may need, as well as towards any medical expenses they aren't prepared for. COVID has limited our ability to fundraise in other ways, so we have decided this may be a good alternative to offer some support to Dan and Joanne during this difficult time.
Please give any amount you can to help them out! There aren't words to express how grateful we would all be for you giving towards this fight of his life. ❤️
