PROJECT OVERVIEW

Spark Movement Collective opened its 13th season with Baby, I’m Drowning on December 2-3 in Brooklyn, NY. The show included four works that focused on the personal growth and discovery following a period of challenge and change.

The title work, Baby, I’m Drowning, by Artistic Director Michelle Thompson Ulerich uses dance and narrative vignettes to explore the charged emotions of everyday life. Set to new compositions by Johnny Butler, among other works, and featuring the full company, the piece allows the audience to peer into various personal challenges, the relationships that surround them, and the impact they have on those experiencing them. Live musical accompaniment and vocals are woven into the piece, supporting the movement, the performers, and most importantly, the stories being told.

Additional pieces by guest choreographer Robert Rubama and company members Beatriz Castro and Jonathan Colafrancesco further delve into familiar psychological challenges and how we as humans face those obstacles. Baby, I’m Drowning offers a glimpse into the vulnerability and courage needed in order to ask for help, and what happens when we have the grace to receive it.

In April, Spark's newest children's show, The Princess and the Pea, will tell a classic fairytale story with a modern twist to children and families in Brooklyn. The show will be narrative, joyful, and interactive with an underlying message of acceptance and standing up for who you are.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Join Spark in supporting our dancers, choreographers, musicians, and guest artists during our 13th season and throughout the upcoming production of The Princess and the Pea, by donating to our annual campaign. It is through the generosity of our friends, family, and patrons that we continue to make accessible, mission-centered art that touches our humanity and speaks to the universal experiences of the times. A tax-deductible donation of any amount will put us closer to our goal!

HOW THE FUNDS WILL BE USED

Production Costs (Goal: $5,000)
Covers theater and rehearsal space rental, lighting designer fees, musician fees and commissions, and costumes, among other things. These are the foundations of live performance.

Artist Stipends (Goal: $8,000)
As we continue to grow and evolve as a company, so does our dancer pay model. This year, Spark’s Board of Directors has implemented a pay increase for all Spark dancers to support their artistry and respect their time in a way that we have always hoped would be possible. Spark’s dancers are incredibly talented and creative performers who are dedicated to their craft and to the company. Our dancers spend months in rehearsal developing and refining choreography, including 80+ hours preparing for each show.

Support Spark as we dive enthusiastically into lucky year 13 and all that it has to offer. Thank you for your support.
