Smithfield Community Garden
I am a parent at Smithfield Elementary. Recently, the community garden at the school that provides vegetables for families in the community that face food insecurity was vandalized by people who lit fireworks at the garden area and then sprayed that area with an industrial sized fire extinguisher. The chemicals from the fire extinguisher damaged the soil and the vegetables in the garden. Students also learned in this garden space and helped to plant everything that was there. This year's harvest was expected to feed 25-50 families per week over the summer.
The school will be creating a new raised bed garden in the courtyard area. This courtyard will be protected from any outsiders. The new garden space will cost about 6,000.00 to create. The school has someone who is a former student who will build all of the beds and the school has volunteers/students to add the soil and compost. The school recently had donations of vegetables but they need our support to provide the funding for soil, compost, lumber and rebar to build out the beds.
