I am really excited and nervous! I have connected with a group of Quakers that are planning a trip to Israel and Palestine June 20 - July 6. For those of my theater and activist friends that may not know, I've been attending the Friends Meeting in Brooklyn since 2008. There has been a Quaker school in Ramallah for over 125 years and part of the trip is connecting with the Friends school and Meeting and helping with projects to improve the physical properties. Well, I've signed on to go but the cost of the trip is somewhat out of my range. It will cost around $3,300 (the plane ticket alone is $1,744) and so I've set up this go-fund-me page to try to raise as much of the money as possible.
We will be going all over the West Bank meeting with peace activists, both Palestinian and Israeli, and with organizations and schools that work with both groups trying to build relationships and trust. We will also spend a day in Jerusalem and do a fair amount of sight-seeing (Wailing Wall, Garden of Gethsemane) as well as meeting with a Jewish settler and the Imam of the Al-Ayn Mosque.
We will visit the Sea of Galilee and the Church of the Multiplication, the Dead Sea and Qumran.
We will spend some time at the Mar Elias School in Ibillin, Israel, a school of 1200 students, 60% Muslim and 40% Christian (unfortunately, no Jewish students at this point, but there are a small number of Druze students), that seeks to build harmony among people of diverse backgrounds.
We will travel to Hebron with members of Breaking the Silence, an organization of former Israel Defense Forces soldiers who advocate for an end to the occupation and a just peace.
Although I take yearly jaunts over the Canadian border to see theater at the Shaw Festival just on the other side of Niagara Falls, I have really only been out of the United States twice in my life--once when I worked on a cruise ship as a performer going back and forth to Bermuda for six months in the 1980s and then in 2000 when I went to Germany for 10 days. I am hoping that this trip will help reorient and revitalize me. It will certainly provide an eye-opening experience.
Please contribute as generously as you can and thank you for your support!
