Help Leah Pinedo and Jessi Fernandez  by making a donation for us to study abroad and go to Oxford University.

Hear from the students themselves:

Jessi Fernandez:
"Who would have ever thought I would come across this opportunity to study abroad at Oxford, England? This feels surreal, something you only see on television or dream about. I would love to get out of Los Angeles. It will feel like a fresh start for me. There are many reasons why I shouldn't even be alive today, but thank God I am. Losing my mom, grandma, and two of my closest friends I considered brothers was a lot for any one person to take. That made me hit my rock bottom and led to many incarcerations and pain in my life, but all of it made me stronger and appreciate the little things in life. All I have ever known is the street and gang lifestyle, which impaired me from ever thinking about going to college. Growing up I always wanted to travel and get away from all the bad I encountered on a daily basis. Many who know me and that have love for me always wished the best for me. They hoped to see me make something out of myself and this opportunity has not only impacted me, but those who care for me as well. All of my trials and tribulations motivate me to move forward and surpass all the stereotypes. This is a privilege. I believe this program will offer me more than just the experience of studying in a foreign country. It will allow me to really figure out who I am and really focus on my studies without the many distractions and dangers I have in my community. This is my escape from everything that has dragged me down. I believe it will truly help me develop responsibility, inititave, and growth. "

Leah Pinedo:
"Being accepted into Pasadena’s study abroad program will give me the opportunity to expand my knowledge and education as a young adult. Not only will it open more educational opportunities, but it will also give me the chance to explore what I never had. My contribution to the program would be the effort I will put into class and my gratitude for being in the program. I will have a positive attitude that I hope to share with the group! When there are goals to be accomplished, I put all I can into them. At Pasadena City College I try my hardest in every class I register for. I work hard and strive to get good grades. Teachers see my eagerness and determination and know I'm not just fooling around. Being able to step foot onto another country is something I would never have imagined. This trip will allow me to grow mentally and spiritually. Not only would I be able to attend one of the best universities, but also explore the world. Where I come from we are so confined to one area because that is all we know and all we think we have. I would like to grow out of this closed minded mentality and make something better of myself. Oxford, England is said to be filled with a rich and exciting culture, artistic and intellectual history. The experience of going to another country is jaw-dropping. Going would enable me to accomplish my childhood dream of visiting Paris, France and standing in front of the Eiffel Tower! Who would pass up such chances? I certainly am not and going to take all the world has to offer me."
