Purpose: To fund legal battles, community advocacy, and environmental studies to stop the privatization of Pavones’ beaches, protect local homes and businesses, and preserve the community’s way of life.

The Story:

Pavones, Costa Rica—a natural paradise, surfer’s haven, and tight-knit community—is under threat. Developers and local authorities are pushing to transform this vibrant town into exclusive private resorts, threatening to:

Privatize the beach and control the world-class Pavones wave.

Demolish local homes and businesses, some standing for over 30 years, with demolition orders already issued.

Eliminate public beach access by removing beach roads, replacing them with a boulevard, and providing almost no parking.

Displace local fishermen, relocating them to an unsuitable area and jeopardizing their access to the fish Co-Op, threatening their livelihoods.

Erase the community as we know it, leaving families homeless and jobless.

The Municipality of Golfito is enabling this takeover, issuing demolition notices while ignoring the rights of locals. Outdated regulatory plans from the early 2000s, never updated despite a 5-year requirement, leave the community vulnerable. No recent environmental impact studies have been conducted, and the municipality’s negligence has left locals without legal security for decades.
