WHY NANA NEEDS US - THE STORY
In 2008, NaNa discovered a lump under her tongue.
After seeing four different ENT specialists who refused to act, she was finally diagnosed in 2009 — by then, the tumor had grown dangerously and was life threatening.
A surgeon told her:
“If you weren’t a singer, I would’ve cut out most of your tongue.”
NaNa refused:
“I didn’t know if I would want to go on living if I woke up without a tongue. Singing was never a profession for me — I’ve been singing since I was in my mother’s womb. My voice was shaped by my parents, by the musical talents of their ancestors, and by their will. A gift from God.”
She risked her own life to save her voice and underwent radiotherapy , chemotherapy and brachyterapi only.
She survived, but the long-term effects were devastating.
I an attempt to save her tongue,
NaNa's tongue became completely immovable because of the scaring.
Noone told her it would happen.
She had to learn to talk again.
For the first 3 years she had a feeding tube in her stomach - eating through the mouth was too painful.
Her vocal chords were unharmed and it made NaNa keep fighting through the traumas after the surgeons ignorance.
But.. It got worse...
In 2014, a devastating diagnose.
The brachy therapy was destroying her jawbone. A complete resection of the entire mandible was needed.
The surgeons now told her:
She would never smile again.
She would never feel a kiss again.
She would never get dental implants — not even dentures.
She would never get a normal size jaw.
And the worst words of all, they told her:
“You will never be able to sing again.”
When she asked if any other surgeons elsewhere could help, the response was:
“No one in the world can do better than us.”
NaNa realized that if she was to do the surgery in Sweden - the outcome would be looking like she'd had stroke on both sides of her face.
8 YEARS OF GLOBAL RESEARCH
NaNa refused to accept that.
"You can't tell me that you are the absolute best in the world! There is always someone better, bigger, taller, more skilled.. That made me angry and very determined to prove them wrong. "
For eight years, NaNa did the research herself, contacting maxillofacial surgeons all over the world. She finally found proof that:
Fibula-free flap jaw reconstruction can be done without cutting the facial nerve — preserving sensation and movement.
Surgeons in New York had techniques that could preserve the soft tissues around the throat, avoiding further loss of function.
This led her to an Indian surgeon who later came to Sweden and started working at the Akademiska Hospital in Uppsala, where he got the head of the Oral Surgery apartment very interested to try the advanced technique that was new for Sweden, but not in India.
"So, when the head surgeon saw my CT scan, he just blurted out:
'I just have to say this! When I saw your scans, I said out loud three times,
"That's the worst fucking injury I've ever seen."'"
But after a year of waiting and preparing mentally , the hospital withdrew the offer — leaving NaNa with no choice but to start all over again and look elsewhere.
She had a breakdown.
The Indian surgeon at the Swedish hospital became a good friend.
He was shocked by the way NaNa was treated and told her that if she came to India, he would be able to give her the help she so desperatly needed.
THE INDIA SURGERY & BEYOND
The 1 January 2022, we - M. A. S - started this journey with NaNa and all thanks to the donations from so many amazing people who follows and loves her -
NaNa was able to travel to Bangalore, India in the end of May.
In September,
after a 20-hour difficult surgery in Kochi - Kerala, her jaw was successfully rebuilt — but the job wasn’t finished.
The jaw was to be adjusted in a second surgery after 6 months of healing and rehabilitation.
When NaNa returned to India in April 2023, the hospital had changed the plan entirely. They insisted on preparing for titanium implants — despite earlier agreements that this would be done in Sweden after the jaw was properly resized.
NaNa refused to jeopardize her future by locking in a jaw that was still too big.
She took a very hard decision and left India, and instead turned to the maxillofacial surgeon in New York she heard about years earlier. After video conferences and waiting further 6 months she finally got to meet him in person in March 2024.
