Save Curtis and Billy from Homelessness

My name is Curtis. My husband Billy and I have been together now for almost 14 years. We've faced many trials in our lives. But through the good and bad we've stuck together through it all. We aren't even properly married on paper because true marriage equality does not exist. If I were to actually marry my husband I would lose disability status and my healthcare which would promptly lead to my demise (I have Cystic Fibrosis and if it weren't for my disability status I'd have been dead a long time ago). I'm not going to sugar coat it. We are here to beg plain and simple.

The past year has been exceptionally difficult with one thing right after another going wrong in our lives. With no sign of things getting better this is our last resort. Our final grasp trying desperately to get out of the hole that life keeps shoving us deeper and deeper into. My husband Billy has been having his wages garnished for the better part of two and a half years. My disability has been getting garnished for a year due to the government overpaying me on a GI Bill I got from my mother's time in the airforce before her untimely death when I as looking into college. I was a fresh into adulthood and received a check that I wasn't supposed to get, when I called about it I was told I could spend it so of course I did, now 12 years later that's came back to haunt me.

Was poor choices on my end I shouldn't have just spent it because a rep on the phone said it was fine for me to spend it, that's a whole different kettle of fish at this point. The money we're asking for is so Billy can file for bankruptcy to stop the wage garnishment. He's been on a waiting list for 2 years now because he can't afford to pay so he's waiting for the bankruptcy lawyer to do a pro-bono case. No end to that waiting list in sight. He need's $1,500 to file. He has been driving his car uninsured for about a year now with expired tag because he has no other option. There's no way to magically make the money to reinsure his car and renew his tags show up with his wages being garnished as aggressively as they are. He'll need $500 to reinsure his car and renew his tags with the additional fees that have been added as a result of them being expired for almost a year. That number will go up at the end of the year if we don't get that sorted by December 31st.

If we can't get get the money raised by the time our lease ends in January of next year then our next step is being homeless. My survivability goes out the window if we become homeless. Due to my Cystic Fibrosis I have to have access to refrigeration and electricity just to be able to use the equipment and medications responsible for keeping me alive. Those things do not exist in a state of homelessness. I could move into Section 8 but that would require me to leave my husband behind. I'm not about to do that after almost 14 years together. I will die before I abandon him.

As I mentioned earlier, we are here to beg plain and simple. Dignity out the window, we can't afford dignity. We've already cut everything we can out of our lives to increase our monthly budget. It simply isn't enough, not with this economy, not with the cost of living. Nothing is affordable anymore. I've said before I can't remember the last time we were living, we've been surviving on the razor's edge for quite some time. And now we've gone over that edge, we're drowning. We need a life preserver, if we can get the wage garnishment to go away, that will save our lives. But I dont' know how much longer we can last like this. When I started making this gofundme it said I should ask for $13K since that's what people commonly ask for. We don't need $13K and I'm only comfortable asking for what we well and truly need.

Please, I'm asking everyone, anyone. Save our lives. $2K and not a cent more will save our lives. There's nothing more I can say. All I can do is hope that there's people out there willing to help. There's nothing I can offer in return. I wish there was. All I have is the promise that anyone who donates will have my unending gratitude. No matter who you are, where you are, I will forever till my dying breathe be grateful for any contribution you made.

Photo used for the banner is from happier times long ago. I don't really have any pictures that are relevant to the topic at hand. So it's really just a placeholder image essentially since gofundme requires a picture. That's my ESA Nova, she's one of the few things in life right now that is helping us keep going on despite how bad things are.
