My name is Sara Martinez Arango. I am asking for help, which is a big thing for me. I graduated from Mount Holyoke this past December with a B.A in Politics. I left a semester early mostly because of financial reasons. I then decided to move to Chicago to be closer to my partner and seek greater opportunities here. I arrived with a fellowship that didn't amount to anything. My morale failed me time and time again until I landed an amazing job opportunity to become a union organizer.
I was a week from signing my contract when all of my most important documents—passport, social security card, and employment authorization card, were stolen at a DMV. I lost this job opportunity for failure to present “original” documents and now, am likely to face that issue over and over again. I was getting ready to apply for adjustment of status, but with no secure source of income that, too, has become harder. I am asking that you please help, however possible, to cover the cost of my EAD so I can work. I've had moments these past few weeks when I've been void of any hope but I'm holding on to the support and love that abounds in communities I have walked with.
BACKGROUND:
I arrived to the United States when I was seven and lived undocumented until 2012 when badass immigrant organizers pushed Obama to pass Deferred Action for
Childhood Arrivals (DACA). This is how I was able to obtain a temporary social security card, EAD, and the opportunity to visit my home country after 13 years last
summer. I guess am “DACAmented” and learning how truly discretionary/temporary this status can be.
I’ve still got a couple of months to go before this situation can be settled for me but I’m hopeful that things can only go up from here. Positive thoughts bring positive outcomes and that is what I’m holding on to.
I am setting a goal of $2,140 to cover the total cost of my EAD renewal and forms I-130 and I-485, which will be the first step towards adjusting my immigration status. Anything helps!
EAD Renewal: $465
Form I-130: $535
Form I-485: 1,140
With love,
Sara Martinez A.
