Help the Sam Family in Ahousaht Rebuild After the Cyclo-Storm
This holiday season, the Sam family in the remote Indigenous community of Ahousaht is in urgent need of our help. A devastating cyclo-storm has wreaked havoc, leaving many without safe and livable homes. Among those most impacted is the family of Qaamina Sam and Ruth, cherished community leaders, ceremonial healers, and knowledge keepers who have dedicated their lives to caring for others.
For over 15 years, under Qaamina’s guidance, I have helped organize holiday drives in Ahousaht—bringing food, toys, and warmth to families during an emotional and traumatic time of year due to the impacts of residential school. But this year, Qaamina and his family need our help. So we are taking a new approach with this giveaway because the need is critical and urgent. The storm has destroyed the front room, deck, and entrance of Sam family home. Without collective help, these incredible Elders who have spent their lives supporting others will be left without a safe space for themselves, their grandchildren, and the foster children they house and care for.
Qaamina and Ruth have been pillars of strength and healing for Ahousaht and communities across Canada. They’ve raised 18 grandchildren and provided a home for countless foster children over the past two decades, embodying generosity and resilience in the face of immense challenges. Now, it’s our turn to give back.
We’re raising funds to purchase building materials to repair and rebuild their home, ensuring that this incredible family has a safe roof over their heads for the holidays and beyond. Every dollar brings us closer to providing them with the security and stability they need to continue their vital work.
