Cedar Tree For Granard Primary School

Donation protected
Over the years, Granard has seen many changes - pupils, staff, governors, contractors and buildings. The one constant has been our amazing ‘Cedar of Lebanon’ tree. This is estimated to be in excess of 350 years old, as these magnificent trees were introduced into Britain some 400 years ago, as proof of wealth by rich aristocrats for their huge estates.

However, after a very short period of decline, we were recently given the very unfortunate news that the ‘Granard Cedar Tree’ has reached its end of life.

The Cedar tree is not only at the heart of Granard, but is our school logo and motto ("Growing together; Achieving together"). It is also, without question, a huge part of our connection to our local community, both past and present. Tens of thousands of pupils’ lives have been shaped by their time at Granard, with the Cedar tree always being one of their most prevalent memories, ever since our opening on the former grounds of the ‘Granard’ estate in 1953.

Unfortunately, whilst we recognise its enormous emotional value, the health and safety aspect of having such a huge tree in its condition within our playgrounds requires it to be taken down. As you can imagine, this will come at a considerable cost. As we appreciate the impact it has had on so many people, we have plans to have mementoes made as tokens, including a possible memorial carving.

The good news is we recognise the historic importance of ensuring Granard and its tree continue for many years by planting a replacement Cedar tree. We could not possibly start with a sapling, as that would take decades to grow, so we would like to buy a partly grown one. The cost is in the region of £15k.

However, we cannot spend money allocated for nurturing and educating our children on replacing the tree, despite recognising the importance. So that is why we must to appeal to you - to help us keep a Cedar tree on Granard's grounds. We are sure that you will recognise the importance, emotionally and symbolically, of the tree to staff and pupils. So anything that you can do to help would be much appreciated

Thanking you in advance
