Racial Literacy: Teens & Textbook

Donation protected
Kids first start recognizing a world structured by racial injustice at three years old, but the first time we talked about race in school was tenth grade. Now 18, we've dedicated our lives to ensure that we start this timely conversation earlier: our hope lies in every teacher’s power to shape generations of unity and love.

In high school, we published a 224-page racial literacy textbook funded by Princeton University's Department of African American Studies and currently impacting students in over 30 states.

But racial literacy shouldn’t stop outside the classroom.
Instead, we envision a culture where every person’s story and act matters, where people can refocus their work toward justice no matter wht background or profession they have, no matter who they are.

So The Race Index was born: our next book. From last July 2017 to this February 2018, we’ve been traveling to all 50 states during our gap year before college, collecting stories from ordinary people—as well as research—about race, culture, and intersectionality. The book is scheduled to be released in fall 2018.

We hope to give a platform to unheard voices around the country, to tell youth of color like ourselves and adults alike that their stories matter. We believe that publishing hundreds of them in one collection, accessible to everyone but especially for educators, is one of the most effective ways to transform minds and hearts everywhere in the United States.

It's up to us to raise the funds for this project and keep it alive as we enter college this Fall (and beyond). For more information about what we've been up to, continue reading below :)

Each contribution truly enables our work—we're so grateful for all donations. Thank you so much for believing in us and our mission!

With gratitude,
Winona Guo and Priya Vulchi
