Gear Up Oakland is an initiative run by Black and Brown women in Oakland to provide FREE BULLET-PROOF VESTS AND GAS MASKS to the people of Oakland, to protect against police violence at peaceful protests.
With recent threats from Donald Trump to send federal law enforcement agents into Oakland, and with the current ongoing brutalization by local police toward peaceful protesters, we are aiming to provide urgently needed defensive protection.
You can contact our organization on Instagram @gearupoakland. ANY and ALL funds raised here will go directly to online bulk purchases of bullet-proof vests and gas masks, which will be distributed in person at peaceful protests. Our mobile station can be found at Oakland protests by our Gear Up Oakland banner. Photos of the gear drops will be on the Instagram page for further accountability. Each bullet-proof vest costs $299, so please think deeply of the funding it takes to protect each precious life and give what you can, or share if you can't.
A statement from one of the founders: "As a dark-skinned Black woman born in America, I have experienced a life of profiling and racial injustice, along with millions of other Black and Brown people. I have experienced being tear gassed, followed, shot at and bullied by the police while peacefully protesting and have witnessed countless of other acts of unlawful assault on innocent citizens of this country. I believe in the power of the people, and in order to retain our numbers and our stamina, we must protect ourselves in every way possible. This organization was started with the intention of stocking up our community with the best protection possible to survive the unprovoked attacks by law enforcement. WE take care of US!"
