My name is Darlington Ehiagwina, a 45-year-old single father and an amputee. I lost my father when I was just 7, and by the age of 10, I was already trying to support my mother and five siblings. Life was tough, and during that challenging time, I suffered a fall from a high building that resulted in the amputation of my right leg, nearly costing me my life.
I missed out on many opportunities that children usually have, including education, but I persevered and eventually married, welcoming two wonderful sons into the world.
In 2023, my wife was kidnapped, which left me financially devastated. Thankfully, she returned alive, but the trauma took a heavy toll on us. After all my resources were exhausted in her rescue, she chose to leave our boys for another man who could provide her with financial security. While I understand her decision, the pain of not being able to protect my family still lingers.
Now, I find myself unemployed and relying on the generosity of others. My prosthetic leg, which I’ve used for over two decades, is worn-out, cracked, and ill-fitting. I often have to resort to crawling on the floor to manage daily tasks, and it breaks my heart to see the pain this causes my kids. I find myself hiding my tears as I try to smile and play it off when I struggle to get up.
Currently, I’m behind on my rent and have pleaded with my landlord for more time. I’m not making an extravagant request; I genuinely need assistance with:
1. A new, properly fitted prosthetic leg that will allow me to walk comfortably and engage more actively in my children’s lives.
2. Clearing my overdue rent so my children don’t have to suffer the stress of potential homelessness.
3. A small sum to launch a modest neighbourhood grocery business, enabling me to provide for my family.
A total of $7,000 would cover these essential expenses:
- New prosthetic leg with fitting and therapy: $3,000
- Overdue rent: $1,000
- Initial shop rent and basic supplies: $3,000
Every contribution, no matter how small, would mean the world to me and restore my hope. I’ve carried this burden for far too long and long for the stability to care for my kids. They deserve to see me strong and capable.
If you are unable to contribute financially, even sharing my story would be a tremendous help. Your kindness will not go unnoticed.
Thank you for taking the time to read my plea. I appreciate any support you can provide.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Darlington Ehiagwina
