I would like to introduce you to 2 wonderful people in my life. They live by their wedding vows..."in sickness and in health". Let me tell you about Paula and John Doupe. Paula is my husband's first cousin and John is her devoted husband. I have known Paula and John for the past 26 years.
They have both worked hard all their lives. Times have never been easy but they always got by. Well until August 2015 when the company Paula and John worked for the pasted 14 years up and closed down the factory. Leaving both of them out of work. As most of us do, Paula and John lived paycheck to paycheck. They were able to get unemployment as they both looked for work.
Two months later Paula started to feel funny. She didn't feel like herself. She started having some unusual symptoms. John thought it was best to call an ambulance to take her to the hospital. Paula was admitted and they ran test after test. She was started to bloat up with fluid that they would have to have drained. This would go on for the next 6-8 months. Once a week John would have to take her to the hospital to have the excess fluid drained from her body.
After the initial first week in the hospital the doctors discovered that Paula had Ovarian Cancer. As well they had found a blood clot on her lung. The doctors told them she would have to have a full hysterectomy as well as her appendix had to be removed. Cancer had taken over!
Paula has always been a positive person. She was never a smoker or a drinker. She believed that God has a plan and that she would be ok. Paula has an ongoing battle with the cancer. They have tried 4 different types of chemo and the cancer has come back 4 times now. She currently still has a cancer spot on her abdomen and a benign spot on her back.
They had a scare this past month thinking that cancer had gone to her brain. With a MRI they were able to tell that it was several blood vessels that will need to be looked at from a neurosurgeon.
If it wasn't enough for one family to endure, after John taking care of Paula these past 3 years. They would find out that John too was sick. John started having severe breathing problems and no energy. He made an appointment with his doctor to find out what was going on. He was sent for tests to be later diagnosed with Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. Alpha 1 doesn't produce proper enzymes to keep his lungs clear. As well as his lungs are too long. In January 2019 John will have to undergo surgery to shorten his lungs. This surgery is risky with a mortality rate of 30-40%.
The recovery time in the hospital varies depending on how well it goes. John will then have a 2-3 month recovery at home were he will not be able to do much of anything. The doctors told John that he would probably never be able to work again.
Paula and John are struggling. For the past 3 years they have tried to keep afloat. The day to day costs are mounting. Back and forth to the hospital, doctors and specialist are costly. With little money coming in they have fallen behind. I am hoping that you could help out Paula and John in these difficult times. As they both still have a tough road ahead. Any donation will be greatly appreciated. If you could please share this, it will help to spread the word.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart
