Nicholas’s mountain of medical costs.

Hi! We are Emily and Jim Peckham, and our son Nicholas has been critically ill. Nicholas entered the hospital on November 19 in end-stage heart failure. He was too sick for a transplant, but was put in the Transplant ICU, because he was so sick. The idea was to implant an LVD heart pump, because his heart was 4 times the normal size and was not pumping efficiently. He had a cardiac arrest before the surgery, which made the mechanical heart implant critical. 2 days after the LVAD surgery, he had to have another open heart surgery to replace his aortic valve.

the medication he had to have to keep his heart pumping cut off blood supply to his extremities, and consequently he had to have both legs and his right hand amputated. He is in end-stage kidney failure from all this and is on dialysis 3 days a week. He has been in the hospital over 3 months, 2and one half months in ICU. He is now in a step down unit. He has to have wound care for bedsores, and physical therapy/occupational therapy 3-4 days a week. His prosthetic legs were delivered today, and he will have to have lots of therapy to learn to walk again.

Nicholas will have to be connected to power 24/7 or he will die.

We are hoping he will be eligible for a heart transplant in the future. Whenever he gets to come home, he will need a hospital bed, electric wheelchair, lift (to get him out of bed and into the chair) and constant care.

I hesitated to make this page, but I don’t know what else to do.
