At the age of 2 Nathaniel John McGee was diagnosed with an unknown neurodegenerative disease. This horrific disease has resulted in loss of nerve structure and function causing him to be cognitively and physically disabled. Nathaniel was given a gastrostomy tube (also called a G-tube). This was tube delivers nutrition directly to the stomach to make sure kids with trouble eating get the fluid and calories they need to grow. He also has a tracheostomy which assists his breathing. Nathaniel suffers from a seizure disorder and has been in and out of the hospital most of his life with several respiratory infections. In March of 2012 his condition changed and he was placed on a ventilator. Although he wasn't expected to make it through the recovery process, Nathaniel did recover to the best of his abilities and proved to the world that he is a fighter.

In July of 2016 Nathaniel was placed as a DNR/DNI. At this time his medical team informed us that his brainwave activity had diminished yet he continued to fight and we were once again lucky enough to share life with him for a bit longer.

Two weeks ago on September 8th Nathaniel was sent to Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo with parainfluenza. He was admitted to ICU and the medical professionals there began giving a constant, high flow of oxygen as well as morphine and Valium for comfort.

After much deliberation, sadness, anger, and tears we are now at the “Comfort Stage” of sweet Nathaniel’s life. The G-Tube has been removed so his body is not getting nutrition. The high flow of oxygen has been lowered and will continue to be lowered until the flow comes to a stop. When the flow of oxygen stops we know our Nathaniel’s breathing will eventually stop. His tired little body will no longer struggle. He will no longer have to fight this battle of simply living. He will be at peace. He will get to sing in harmony as his beautiful soul meets his angels above. Nathaniel was…… IS a miracle! Each day of his precious life was a blessing. It serves as a reminder for us who will be left behind on this Earth to be grateful for each breath, each hug, each laugh, and each tear. Embrace the day and rejoice in this thing we call life because as we know……tomorrow is never promised. Thank you Nathaniel for showing us the true meaning of strength, faith, and love. Rest easy my love <3

Our goal is to provide some financial relief for Nathaniel’s family during this difficult time. In the short-term, this relief may help to cover memorial services and living expenses while his family is taking time off from work. All donations will be given to Nathaniel’s family directly to use at their discretion.
