Uncle William’s Story
William Humberto Perez is my late father's youngest brother. He lives in Mexico. It has been years since I've seen or spoken to my uncle. However, upon finding him on social media and reaching out to him in a message recently, I received the devastating news that he has end-stage kidney cancer.
I remember the last time we met: I said farewell to him at the edge of the ocean in his hometown. In Mexico, it is not unusual to say “farewell” instead of “good-bye” because the latter means that we will never meet again, or that one of us will die.
He then got into the old taxi that he used to drive his passengers around in, and drove away . . .
We meet again under these unfortunate circumstances.
But this time, there will be no farewell . . .

I have the opportunity to make this good-bye less physically painful for him.
He has refused to undergo chemotherapeutic treatment, after witnessing his brother (my dad) battle cancer for years unto his death. My uncle is 72 now and very frail. The doctors have told us that the possibility of a cure is minimum since the cancer is already spread to his bones and other areas.
I strongly believe that patients should have the right to choose the way they ultimately want to live or die. Understandably, my uncle does not want to experience any more pain than he already is. Our whole family have come to terms with his decision.
In our last days spent with him, all we want is for him to not have to suffer.

My uncle is currently on 8 medications to suppress the pain in various areas of his body—mainly spinal column and pelvis.
I have made the goal of this campaign $1600. (Realistically, this amount will only cover ONE of the medications for him for just a month and a half. He is on 7 other medications, so you can imagine how expensive the costs are.)
Due to the severity of my uncle's state, we need to raise funds as soon a possible.

Friends, family, acquaintances and perhaps kind strangers, if you've made it this far. . . I am appealing to you.
All I can do is try. . . try to raise some money so that my uncle can die in peace, as painless as possible.
As a future nurse, I have witnessed that reaching out to the community can make a dying person feel better supported. Whatever you are able to contribute is truly appreciated. Our family will be forever grateful for your generosity.
Thank you immensely. ❤️
With utmost love and gratitude,
Maricel
