Ok here goes......Martin's a lovely fella, He's married with two kids... really smart guy, very active and likes climbing mountains and that kinda thing. He takes great pleasure in dragging me up mountains with him (i hate climbing mountains!).
Anyway on one of our adventures Martin noticed his leg seemed to be dragging a little and not doing what he wanted it to do, He never said anything at the time and me and another lad climbing with us were none the wiser.
A few months later Martin found out his leg issue was down to a brain tumor. I think he'd had it a while but now it'd grown to a size where it was pressing on a part of his brain responsible for motor function. He got referred to an excellent surgeon who was honest with Martin from the get go, telling him that even though he'd be able to remove the majority of the tumor..because of it's location it would be very difficult to remove all of it (think of it like removing a weed without removing it's root). And so because of this there was a chance it could grow back.
After some great aftercare, and support from his wife Jen he was back fighting fit...he'd made a number of lifestyle changes, ate all the right things, stopped drinking and he'd stopped smoking years before. To be honest he always did eat healthy but now he'd cut out the odd cheeky chocolate bar also. Things were looking up.
Over the next 8 years though Martin was in and out of hospital having another 3 ops. Each time never removing the root and each time taking a little more motor function with it.
In 2022 He underwent radiotherapy too. He also had to go in hospital in January this year for an emergency operation to prevent an infection, due to his wound from an operation he had a month earlier not healing properly.
He had another hospital stay in March due to a cluster of seizures, which have severely reduced his ability to walk. He has to take anticonvulsant meds for the rest of his life, to manage his seizures. Everytime i see him though he always maintains his positive outlook on life.
Anyway i always keep in contact like lads do by the means of sending each other comical memes, i sent him one the other day and long story short he told me that the surgeon had told him that there was nothing else they could to do for him and that any futher attempt at surgery could be catastrophic. They tried to get funding for chemotherapy (twice) and got rejected twice! Quality of life is now the main focus.
So I thought i'd put this story on gofundme in the hope we can get some money together for chemo and support for the family while Martin's out of work. I'm gonna keep paying into this regardless ....i literally can not think of a guy who's more deserving of a gofundme page than my long time friend Martin Walker.
Please help me give my m8 a second chance.
Much love
