As central Romania was consolidating its kingdom in the late 1800s, a secluded village near the Carpathian Mountains is gripped by grief and strange, unsettling energies. Haunted by the recent death of his father and plagued by hellish nightmares that have kept him awake for weeks, Ioan is urged to confess his sins to the village priest in hopes of finding peace. Inside the suffocating stillness of the church, Ioan grows increasingly uneasy and fatigued. The priest performs every ritual and prayer he can offer, yet nothing seems to lift the weight pressing on Ioan’s soul. As the prayers intensify, fragments of Ioan’s tormented mind begin to surface — visions of a crow, a goat, an angel, a baby, a woman, a witch. Each image feels disturbingly familiar, yet impossibly distant. Overwhelmed, Ioan abruptly rises and storms out of the church. As his thoughts grow darker and more vivid, he flees into the forest. Something is calling to him. Something strangely liberating. Through the trees he notices six girls dancing in a clearing. Their movements are mesmerizing — beautiful, hypnotic, otherworldly. In them, Ioan sees everything he longs for: freedom, release, escape. As the girls shift and blur in form, Ioan feels an irresistible pull to join them. Something deep inside warns him not to. But the promise of escape is too powerful. Relief washes over his face as he surrenders to the euphoric spell they cast and steps into their circle. One of the girls breaks away, drawing his gaze as the other five spin around him. She moves with captivating grace — twisting, turning, her presence consuming his attention. As the dance intensifies, so does the rapture on Ioan’s face. He is completely absorbed by her. Suddenly the circle collapses as the girls shove Ioan to the ground. Dazed but smiling in bliss, he looks up — just as the six dancers begin to twist and contort into something far more feral.
