Motorize wheelchair fundraiser for Ron Rubic “Snooksie”
Donation protected
My name is Amanda Rubic, my family and I are seeking to raise funds to purchase a specialized motorized wheelchair for my father, Ron (affectionately known as Snooksie).
Nearly a year ago, my father suffered a severe fall while attempting to leave the house to attend his granddaughter's my daughter’s baseball game. Unfortunately, he was unable to make it that day, but he is determined to make amends by attending another game in the future.
The fall resulted in significant damage to his neck and spinal cord, leading to cord compression and an epidural collection at the C4-6 levels. Immediate surgery was necessary, which left him with life-altering injuries, including spinal stenosis. These injuries have caused weakness, loss of sensation, and motor impairments, rendering him unable to walk, sit, stand, or even manage his daily needs independently.
Before the accident, my father was an active individual who cherished spending time with family and friends and participating in various activities with his grandchildren.
Regrettably, the future now appears drastically different. The once independent man now relies on others for every aspect of his life. He is unable to engage in outings or attend many family events. Unable to return home and will require compassionate care living, but a specific wheel chair is required for his day to day quality of life.
Since the fall, my father has been hospitalized for over 360 plus days, not only due to the trauma to his neck and spinal cord but also because he has faced numerous health complications since being hospitalized. He developed a pressure sore on his coccyx that nearly cost him his life, further delaying his chances for a proper rehabilitation program to regain a semblance of normalcy.
After an extended wait for a rehabilitation center to accept him, given the health complications associated with being bedridden and strain on our health care system. We have now recently learned that he has been accepted into the Toronto Lyndhurst Rehabilitation Center, effective April 21. However, we must secure 25% of the cost upfront for a specialized motorized wheelchair, which is approximately $30,000-$40,000, before that date.
I am hoping to raise enough money to cover this cost for my Dad to have a suitable wheelchair to not only have him more mobile but to also off set for the pressure wounds that have occurred on his body and prevent Autonomic dysreflexia (AD) a life-threatening condition that can occur in someone in his situation. I am also hoping this will allow us to bring him out and which I believe will greatly improve his quality of life.
Any donation large or small would be gratefully appreciated and go a long way towards achieving our goal. Also, I would be so grateful if you could please help spread the word and share our fundraiser.
