Service Project Vehicle-Mike & Janet Adkins

Dear All

For the past 35 years my parents have been working in Kenya and are currently involved in several undertakings including reforestation, community ministries and most recently have been involved in water and sanitation projects in the northern part of the country. With the installation of 6 mechanized boreholes over the past year, they have provided 100s of thousand of liters of clean water to thousands of people.  A mechanized borehole, for those wondering, is a water well, with a submersible pump run by solar power, pumping water from aquifers to tanks on the ground. The construction, rehabilitation and preservation of water sources is essential to ensuring the health and well-being of the communities they work with.

The areas they work in are very remote, and as such require a competent 4wd vehicle. They currently have a 1997 Land Rover Defender, affectionately called the "OGB" (Old Grumpy Beast).

It has over 300,000 kms on the clock and is tired. It recently had an electrical fire, forcing my parents to cancel the trip up north only a few hours in, and return home to repair it. Until now, its grounded as the spares needed are not available in country.

The OGB doesn’t have airbags, air-conditioning, nor does it have power steering at this point. There is an admirable frugality, a sort of survivor spirit, that says “we can make this work, we’ll get it running again, it will be ok”. Unfortunately, I think they’ve pushed the old machine to its max.

I am reaching out to family, friends, strangers, adventurers, people passionate about water projects, anyone who is interested. We would like to replace the Defender with a newer, less tired, but still competent 4wd vehicle and are hoping you may be interested in supporting this cause. I don’t like asking individuals for money. And I know that the reason my parents have not reached out is the same.

Our goal is $20,000 USD. This will allow them to purchase a 4wd vehicle with off road capability, of the 2006-2010 vintage. Of course, it makes no sense to purchase a new vehicle, given the harsh conditions, but it would be appropriate for them to be using a vehicle with some modern safety features and comforts.

I have attached to this email a few photos of the work they have been involved in and the OGB itself.

My wife and I will be the first to donate, and we hope that will encourage others to help as well.

Thanks so much,
