Hi, our names are Kira Fulton and Ainsley Allen, and for our National Honor Society service project we wanted to do something that would positively impact the lives of kids in need. So, we decided to collaborate with the Milestones for Children Foundation to help them raise money for Dr. DeVivo and his research to find cures for rare pediatric diseases and syndromes, specifically Glut1 deficiency syndrome. This organization is extremely close to our hearts, because Ainsley's older brother Robert Allen was diagnosed with Glut1 ds when he was a baby. 100 percent of the money we raise will go to help fund Dr. DeVivo's research to find a cure at the laboratories at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.
Glut1 ds is a rare metabolic brain energy syndrome where glucose can not properly be transported to the brain. The resulting lack of brain energy causes all kinds of serious physical and cognitive symptoms. This disorder is rare, yet there are thousands of children in the U.S. and globally who suffer with Glut1 ds and many more who remain undiagnosed. Many children diagnosed with Glut1 ds struggle with the things we all take for granted, like walking, talking and learning. Raising money for research will help bring about a cure for kids with Glut1 ds, and we want to be part of this important and life changing effort.
Muffy Antico and Michele Allen created the Milestones for Children Foundation in 2008, inspired by Bobby Allen. Their goal was to both help other families dealing with Glut1 ds and raise money to fund research for a cure. To date, Milestones has raised over $500,000.00 in this effort. But, while the research is poised to do human trials for a cure, funds are lacking to proceed. Now is the time to help!
Raising money for this vital research for a cure would benefit all of the children who battle Glut1 ds as well as future children who are diagnosed with it. Please help us in any way you can.
