72 Years. One Ironman. A Mission to Save Lives.
At 72 years of age, Michael Kimpton is taking on one of the world’s toughest endurance challenges — the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii.
The Ironman is a gruelling test of physical and mental endurance: a 3.8km ocean swim, 180km bike ride and 42.2km marathon run, all completed within the race. It demands months of sacrifice, dedication, training and an enormous amount of resilience.
But Michael knows that the physical challenge he is choosing to take on is minor compared to the battles faced every day by people struggling with their mental health. For someone experiencing depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts or simply feeling like they can no longer cope, there is often no finish line in sight. Their struggle can be invisible, relentless and incredibly isolating.
That is why Michael is racing for something bigger than himself.
Through this challenge, Michael wants to raise much-needed funds and awareness for Whitsunday Suicide Prevention, supporting the vital work being done to help people in our community who are struggling and, most importantly, helping ensure that people know they are not alone.
Every kilometre Michael swims, cycles and runs in Kona will represent something more than a personal achievement. It will represent hope, resilience and the importance of reaching out, checking in and supporting one another.
Michael could simply be enjoying retirement and taking life a little easier. Instead, he has chosen to push himself to the absolute limit in the hope that his journey can help make a difference to someone else's.
The Ironman will be hard and the conditions in Kona are relentless, but for those battling mental health challenges every single day, the struggle can be so much harder.
We are asking our friends, family, community and anyone who believes in this cause to get behind Michael and donate whatever you can. Every donation, no matter how big or small, can help support suicide prevention initiatives in the Whitsunday community and contribute to a future where people feel supported, heard and never alone.
Michael will take on the heat, the wind, the ocean, the hills and the marathon in Kona. His greatest goal isn't to just cross the finish line, It's to help someone else find a reason to keep going.
