Madison's Service Dog Training

At the age of two my daughter had a sleep study done, upon request from her dentist, ENT and pediatrician. It showed that she had stopped breathing over 15 times in one hour. It also showed that she was only getting about 4 full hours of sleep in a 10 hours bedtime span.  She was diagnosed with sleep apnea. Whoa!!! You could image how this shocked me as a parent. I had many questions about how this would affect her growing and her learning capacity. With me being an educator, I wanted to make sure she had everything she needed to obtain educational success.

When she turned three we agreed to have the surgery removing her tonsils and adenoids. We stayed in the hospital because she also has asthma and they had to monitor her breathing.  All was going well until I noticed a few things this summer. She had started back snoring very loud, she started sleepwalking again, she had gaps in her learning, she cried more often and she would fall asleep any time she was sitting for more than a few minutes.

We had another sleep study done this summer, while she was being seen by a new pediatric sleep specialist. The doctors noticed that her adenoids had grown back and the sleep study showed that not only did she have sleep apnea, but now she has narcolepsy. The doctors wanted to remove her adenoids again but could not guarantee that they would not grow back. They would not recommend the CPAP machine because she sleeps so wild and she's a sleepwalker. These factors would cause the machine to disconnect and would not help her if she stopped breathing.

A service dog was suggested. I was thinking that I would have more time to research and gather funds to get a service dog for her or even start the paperwork. NOPE!!!!! Little did I know that she would need the service dog ASAP. Here's why! A few days ago, my daughter was playing on the monkey bars, at school during recess. She had an episode and fell from the monkey bars. Thank God she only suffered a fractured left arm, but that incident was my wake up call.

It was very difficult for me to find an institute that could promise to train a dog for her needs. She would need the dog to sleep with her and wake her if she stops breathing, keep her from falling down the stairs or opening the door, when she sleepwalks and to alert her teacher and or protect her from falling over when she has a narcoleptic episode.

My FB family helped gather a wealth of information and shared my daughter's story on their page. The dog is from an AKC breeder her in TN. The training professions are workers from PetSmart and hopefully, Bill Creasy IACP-CDT, CDTA, PDTI, CSDT IACP Professional # 4828,, AKC CGC Evaluator #56405 of Kingsport, Tennessee. The expenses are totaling to over 15,000. I'm asking for your help to save my daughter’s life and no amount of money can replace her.  Please donate and help us get Madison's service dog properly trained for her unseen disability.
