On June 30, 2020, the beautiful and brave Grayson River Steffke was born nearly one month early. His parents, Marisa Capellan-Steffke and Rich Steffke, are Truckee locals that truly brighten up our community. They give to us everyday in their work, Rich as a Forester with the US Forest Service and Marisa as an elementary school teacher, and now it is our time to step up and support them!
When Grayson was born, he was kept in the NICU for two whole weeks to monitor complications from being born premature. On July 16th they excitedly brought baby Grayson back to the home they have created for him, but by the morning of July 17th he had to be rushed back to the hospital. Marisa and Rich had noticed that he wasn't quite himself and was having difficulty breathing. Grayson's terrestrial guardian angel (words straight from Rich's mouth!) had stopped by right at that moment, and helped push them out the door to the ER.
20 minutes later, Marisa and Rich watched as the incredible professionals at the Tahoe Forest Emergency Room saved Grayson's life. Shortly after, Baby Grayson was put on a Care Flight to Stanford to get the high quality medical attention that he needs. Marisa and Rich rushed to get there, and have been by his side ever since.
Here is what they've learned so far about Grayson's health:
-Grayson has sepsis and bacterial meningitis. This is what caused him to go into cardiac arrest. It is now being aggressively treated.
-Grayson has had two unexplained seizures. Doctors are still working to figure out what exactly caused them. He has been put on anti seizure medication in the meanwhile.
-Grayson's pituitary gland is not functioning as it should be, but this is also getting treated.
-Grayson's blood sugar has been difficult to stabilize.
-Neurologically, tests are still being done and questions remain unanswered.
So far, Marisa and Rich face potentially tens of thousands in medical bills and have to pay thousands of dollars for housing in Palo Alto so they can be near Grayson while he gets the treatment he needs. They have to step away from jobs, friends, and families, and lives here in Truckee to stand by their son so he can get healthier and stronger. Please, please, please give any amount you can to help these three incredible human beings through this incredibly painful and difficult time!
Marisa, Rich, and Grayson- your community loves you and supports you, and can't wait to have you back!
