My name is Michael and I own Lunenburg Kayak Rentals & Floating Cottages. I’m not going to write my life story here but it’s been quite traumatic and filled with a lot of sorrow. In 2016 I was falsely accused of serious crimes that I didn’t commit and incarcerated until my trial. I spent two years in jail getting stabbed and punched in the head by inmates and constantly living in fear. I was 33 years old at the time and never been to jail a day in my life. That was a hell I could never truly explain or wish on anyone. I was found not guilty of every single charge at my trial and released; no apologies or compensation. I was in my mid thirties and had lost everything. I decided to start a new life in Lunenburg Nova Scotia even though I didn’t know anyone here. After a few years of working fishing and boat building in the community, I decided to start my own small business so that I could finally live the dream of being self employed and not being desperately poor. So last year I opened Lunenburg Kayak Rentals. It went great the first year but it sure doesn’t make a lot of money. Not a lot of people come here and rent kayaks but I still love it. I have showed my appreciation to the community by hosting a completely free folk concert series and bbq 4 times each summer. I pay for this out of my own pocket and lose thousands of dollars hosting these events but I care about art and my neighborhood so I kept doing it and still do. So as soon as I started the kayak business, I knew I would have to create another business to sustain myself and pay the bills. I came up with the idea of a floating cottage airbnb. I worked very hard on my plan for over a year and was approved for a loan to build this. Please take in mind that I have no credit or rich family but the plan was so solid that I got a loan to build my first floating cottage. I did due diligence and contacted fisheries and oceans, coast guard, etc. I adhered to all the laws I was told. I applied for and was APPROVED for a short term rental accommodation registry from the municipality of Lunenburg as well as the province of Nova Scotia. I was approved by every facet I talked to and even encouraged by Tourism Nova Scotia. I worked tirelessly to build a beautiful cottage and launched it this spring. I was told that some of the rich millionaire neighbors surrounding our location would have problems with this business but didn’t know how sick and disgusting this would get… So I’ve poured my entire life into this project and I’m about to lose it all because of a few millionaires. These people have made my life a living hell and are trying to take everything from me. The majority of my neighbors love me and see that I’m adding value to the community by hosting free family friendly events, creating jobs and generally caring about my neighborhood. A few old rich people that don’t accept change have been calling every department of the government to try and shut me down. Finally they found one with absolutely ridiculous rules that make zero sense and they told me I couldn’t operate as I am currently (even though I was already approved by all the other departments) So these people have managed to get me evicted from the house I’ve been renting for six years and now have started attacking the owners of the farm that I rent my space from. They decided they will get me kicked out of the community one way or another. These people started calling departments of the government regarding their livestock, their walkways, our docks, anything they can think of and making life hell for us all. These people don’t want to see a young man try and get ahead in life. Maybe it’s because I’m a bit loud, eccentric and covered in tattoos however anyone that has ever met me knows that I’m a good man doing the best I can. Trust me I know I could have worded this all a bit better but I’m so overwhelmed and defeated I can’t think straight. I’m evicted and have nowhere to live, they are trying to shut down my business and attacking me from every angle. I don’t know what to do and I figured I’d reach out to the community just to let you all know that it looks like I’ll have to stop hosting free concerts and events and will have to shut my business down soon most likely. If you are the millionaires that are actively trying to ruin my life and succeeding, I hope you feel nice sleeping at night and please know that karma won’t be kind to you for the way you’ve treated someone trying to do something productive and positive. If you’re anyone else that has supported me and believed in me, I’d like to say thank you so much. I don’t know what will happen in the next few weeks or months but if you see me at a food bank or sleeping under a bridge, just give me a smile please. Please note, some people are cruel and I know for certain a few people will write nasty mean things to me in the comments and tell me how this is my fault etc. I’m just going to delete any hateful things because I’m already pretty close to the end of my rope.
