I received a call from my dear friend about a month ago that shook me to my core. My friend, Sabrina, let me know that she had just received news that her 8 year old son had cancer. I know Sabrina and her son, Keyshawn, because KV also is affected by severe autism. Cancer is always a devastating diagnosis. Then, when you add in minimally verbal severe autism, it makes it that much more complicated and heart breaking. Kids with autism are metabolically complex, sometimes have severe sensory issues that make treatment difficult, and lack the conversational skills to truly understand what is happening to them- and why.
Sabrina said it best here:
"Sometimes, the pain created by the “thorn” is unbearable and leaves you emotionally empty. If you would’ve asked me one month ago to list one of my thorns, I would’ve quickly rambled off one word: AUTISM. Today, with the emergence of a new thorn, my answer would be different. I would calmly utter, AUTISM and CANCER."
Sabrina jumped into action quickly, and Keyshawn immediately began chemotherapy. The plan is/was to shrink the tumor so that he could have a (hopefully) limb saving surgery. And then go on to complete more chemo over the rest of this year. This plan is to give Keyshawn the best possible chance at a positive outcome, and hopefully keep the cancer from spreading and coming back.
Only a few weeks into his cancer treatments and KV had his first major setback. He developed a staph infection in his affected leg which forced him to be readmitted to the hospital for several days. Despite this unfortunate mishap, they're back at the fight now undergoing more chemotherapy.
Sabrina is a force to be reckoned with, and now she needs OUR help. She has spent the last several years raising her triplets while holding down a job in order to provide therapy for KV’s autism. She manages to do all this while her husband works a job that requires extensive travel that keeps him away for weeks at a time. This act to provide for his family leaves Sabrina a "single" married mom of triplets.
As if that were not enough, Sabrina also runs a non profit called Hatching Hope Foundation (HHF). Through this organization, Hatching Hope provides education, community events and much needed resources for minorities affected by autism in Dallas at no cost to families. And somehow she’s found the courage to move forward with their company business plan of expanding the HHF to her hometown, Memphis, because of the lack of resources and knowledge in that area. This mother of triplets truly is a super mom!
The Vaughn family recently made a huge sacrifice and moved their family from south Dallas to north Dallas. They left their comfort zone and increased their monthly mortgage expenses by a considerable amount. This tough decision was made in order to bring KV closer to much needed therapeutic autism resources. Just as that was settling, the news of cancer came in like a mighty rushing wind.
As a result, Sabrina will work a reduced work schedule or possibly leave her career in order to keep up with Keyshawn's cancer treatments. Her work for her nonprofit is done as a labor of love and provides no compensation. All of these factors leave a major financial burden on this family that does so much for the community.
Any funds raised will go directly to helping to keep this family afloat while they adjust to a reduced/one income household. Also, the funds will be used to assist with Keyshawn's growing treatment costs, daily parking fees, supplements that support the damage caused by the harsh chemo medicine, and a nanny to bridge the gap for Keyshawn's triplet siblings while Sabrina is away with KV doing his weekly chemo treatments. Additionally, KV’s autism is still ever present while his Osteosarcoma is being treated . He refuses to touch ANY of the food provided by the hospital. Therefore, food expenses are stacking up daily to keep him eating while chemo tries to rob him of his appetite.
Please join me in this effort to help this wonderful family and please keep Keyshawn in your prayers.
