Keep Syrian Refugees at AUIS

Donation protected
My name is Oliver Keels and I work for the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani.

In the winter of 2016, AUIS accepted 5 Syrian refugees as news students for our program. Our hopes were that with sponsorship from one of our trustees and some outside support from an NGO, these students would be able to start their university eduction that had been delayed by civil war and exile from their homeland.

As the Director of Student Services, I help our students with everything from athletics to clubs to on-campus Housing. These five students would be part of the institution where I work.

These students are bright, funny, and engaged students in their English language course. Their instructor mentioned more than once the energy and enthusiasm that they bring to the classroom. As on-campus residents, I was thrilled to see them investing themselves into our community, making friends with other new students and taking full advantage of the wider community. I was set on seeing these 5 students continue their education and make AUIS a brighter, more diverse place, in the process.

However, the outside NGO did not deliver as much as we had hoped for. Our five students may have had their tuition covered by the sponsor, but they did not have enough money to cover the cost of housing, food, and school supplies. When our team heard that they were considering moving back into refugee camps and leaving behind this chance to earn of college degree, we tried to find some sort of additional funding through private international grants or sponsorships. We came up short.
Right now, I am trying to raise enough money to cover the cost of housing so these students do not have to worry about keeping a roof over their heads while they study at AUIS.

The total amount, $9,000, will cover their housing fees through the end of 2017. This will give us more time to look for grants to help cover the cost of their education. Right now, I just need to make sure they can remain in school. I will wire any funds that are donated to the university's Finance Office. A receipt for the payment will be posted at the end of this campaign.

If you have ever thought about how you would like to make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by the civil war in Syria, this is an excellent opportunity. By donating here, you will be able to help rebuild the lives of five wonderful students, whose world was turned upside down.

Thank you.
