MY LAST HURRAH

Hello. My name is Alex Carbonell-Ezell. I am truly ashamed that it has come to this, please don’t judge me for having arrived at this situation. We never in our entire life had to ask for help from anybody, but here I am.

It has been 8 years since I lost the love of my life, Jeff, in April 2017. We met when I was 19 and he was 20. We didn’t even date; we started living together for an amazing 42 1/2 years. We officially married in Toronto, Canada, on July 21, 2003. We worked our butts off and made a decent living. The day I lost the love of my life was the worst day of my life and no, it never gets easier. It’s the wound that never heals. It is a life sentence.

I am also a cancer survivor. After using ‘active surveillance’ for several years and enduring 3 rectal biopsies, I underwent a robot-assisted radical prostatectomy on May 15, 2019.

As some of you know, I have been dealing with the fact that the natural gas royalties that provided the majority of the income for Jeff and me since 2002 began to pay less and less since 2023. Since then, I have had to use my retirement income to cover rent ($3k) and living expenses. I am also the victim of elder fraud by CarShield, after inititally approving my claim came up with excuses not to pay, and because it involved a new manual transmission it set me back around $8000!

I moved from Boynton Beach to Lake Worth Beach to reduce the rent to $2k and have sold most of my art and furnishings to make ends meet and take care of my 2 cats.

In July 2024, I suffered a minor stroke which makes it difficult to walk properly without the use of a cane, in addition to loss of memory. My ability to use my right leg is down about 50%. A week ago I apparently suffered another minor stroke in my sleep which has set my recovery back. requiring another round of physical therapy.

I have been left surviving on my $2,000 Social Security and $104 SNAP (formerly food stamps).

With my small income, I have become unable to meet my obligations. The Lake Worth Power Company cuts off power if I’m a week late. They have done it twice. I am facing eviction from my present cottage. My landlady has been more than kind to let me stay this long, but I have to vacate by the end of February.

I have decided to get rid of my belongings and buy an RV. If I buy it outright, I will finally be free from paying rent and utilities and will have enough to pay the parking fee and other ancillary expenses connected to having an RV and still have money to feed myself and my 2 boyz.

The RV will allow me to do some inexpensive traveling in the state—no plane tickets, no hotel fees, no cat-sitters. Jeff and I had an amazing life. We traveled often, to London twice a year, lived there for 3 years. Visited Nepal, lived in Lithuania, Canada, etc. Jeff and I had an amazing life together and I know that my best years are behind me.

Here is where y’all come in. I am 70 but cannot afford an RV. I’m not looking for luxury or extravagance, just a place fpr me and my cats to spend what’s left of my life. here are my babies:
