A cause I care about needs help
UPDATE: Due to recent COVID19 restrictions advised across Cumbria as of 1st October 2020 we have unfortunately had to postpone this event. We are very committed to honouring the memory of Steve and we intend to complete this challenge in Spring 2021 as soon as COVID19 allows us. Many thanks for all your ongoing support.
We all have heroes; be they schoolteachers, current global figures or titans from our history.
One of mine is an ex-Firefighter and Royal Marines Officer who, as Director of the Tearfund Disaster Response Team, gave me my first role in humanitarian aid work in Liberia back in 1998.
Steve Penny was a larger than life character who led by example, showing passion, courage, good humour and real care for individuals in his team. His adventurous life took him from South Armagh as a Royal Marine to Cambodia as a Humanitarian Aid Worker and then across Asia and Africa.
Steve was always ready to serve and to respond to the needs of poorest and the most left behind in society.
On 25th April 2019 Steve tragically lost his battle with bipolar disorder and took his own life at the age of 56, leaving behind a loving wife, Shereen and their two sons, Tom and Zach.
He will be hugely missed by all the thousands of lives he positively touched around the world.
In memory of him Ed Walker (another former colleague) and I along with three friends (Dave Anderson, Nat Collins and Tim Tait), are attempting on 10th October to scale the three tallest peaks in the Lake District, Scafell Pike, Helvellyn and Skiddaw. It is the kind of extreme physical adventure, amidst the glory of the wild fells, that Steve would have loved. I have never completed a marathon let alone 40+ miles at an elevation of 4,000 feet in late Autumn in one day so I would appreciate all the encouragement I can get.
It just felt the right thing to do to preserve his memory.
All donations will go to the Soldiers and Airmen’s Scripture Readers Association (SASRA) an organisation who Steve was working with in his final days.
Thank you for your support.
