By the time you finish reading this post, 2 million plastic bags and 1 million plastic bottles will have been purchased, 30,000 plastic cups handed out on flights, and 500,000 plastic straws used around the world.

Yet only 9% of all this plastic ever gets recycled. The rest pollutes our planet—mostly our oceans. Microplastics now make up 73% of beach litter and are found in hundreds of marine species, from shrimp and mussels to the fish we eat. In fact, the average person will consume about 70,000 pieces of microplastics this year alone.

Plastic pollution has even reached the deepest parts of our oceans, including the Mariana Trench. If we don't act now, by 2050, there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish—by weight.

But there’s still time to change this.

They work to pass laws banning single-use plastics, develop greener alternatives, and organize cleanup efforts that remove thousands of pounds of trash before it reaches the ocean.
