Abused dog found in Kirkwood

A stray dog wandered into my yard about a week ago and decided to stay.   She was very afraid, and kept her distance.   It wasn't until I put some food out for her, as she bent down to eat that I saw her injury.  She has a very serious neck wound due to a chain that was embedded.  The vet tech said in 15 years, this is the worst he has ever seen.  

In less than 3 days, emotionally, she is a different animal.  No longer scared, she enjoys pets, belly rubs, and generally being as close to me as physically possible.  Her favorite things right now are chicken fingers, and drinking from the cat's water bowl.  She has come so far, and is learning to trust.  

Physically-- we have a long way to go.  Yesterday she allowed me to remove the chain that caused the injury, but was no longer embedded.  Today at the vet, she was sedated, her neck was shaved, her wound was cleaned, and medication prescribed. Total cost: $245.96.  Monday the Vet is coming in on his day off preform surgery.  The flap with be sewn shut, and a drain will be put on either side.  Estimated cost: $349-$624.  She will also need more medication, and follow up visits.
