I am fundraising to cover the expenses of my mom’s cremation and funeral services. I’d also like to raise a little extra, if possible, to help my dad adjust to losing half of their income and to give him some cushion as we grieve.

This loss was very unexpected. My mom went in for a relatively routine heart surgery, and everything that could go wrong went wrong. She had a complication that only 0.5%–1% of patients have, which meant she needed ECMO to survive. After the ECMO was removed, the site where they’d inserted the cannulas got incredibly infected. We discovered yesterday that the only option to potentially save her life would have been a hip-level amputation, and even then, her chances were less than 10%. We made the agonizing choice to let her go.
