Our GoFundMe goal is to purchase and install a Historical Marker on Eva Mae Jones Road in Pink Hill, NC to recognize the history of Smith Chapel Church and the first school in Pink Hill, NC for Colored Children. Smith Chapel Church was founded and named after its first Pastor, Reverend Billy Smith in the early 1920's. Services were held in the home of Mr. Moltin and Mrs. Gartha Carr. Church services were later moved to a donated train box car. The first church building was constructed at its present location by Reverend Billy Smith and community families. Reverend Billy Smith served as pastor for 22 years and other pastors followed. The church not only served as a place of worship but also a place of refuge for safety from storms & hurricanes. The church ground served as a playground for community kids, summer and afterschool programs, adult education, church meetings, Easter Programs, family reunions, town officials campaigning for office, church fundraising, vacation bible school, cub scout meetings, etc.

In the mid 1930's Lenoir County built a One Room School building for Colored Children to educate grades 1-8 next to Smith Chapel Church located at 413 Old Beulaville Road, Pink Hill, NC. Both the One Room School and Church shared a well pump for water and a outside toilet.

Ms. Lucy Bell Davis was the first teacher, instructing grades 1-8. In 1940, Ms Davis was joined by Mrs. Zella Mae Patterson-King to continue educating Children Of Color. After desegregation, the One Room School was closed and students attended Booker and Whiteless Creek Elementary Schools, Savannah and Woodington Middle and High Schools. Ms. Lucy Bell Davis and Mrs. Zella Mae Patterson-King both continued teaching in Lenoir County Schools. This Historical Marker recognizes the dedication and contributions by the teachers, students and community who paved the way for us all.
Your contributions will help purchase the Historical Marker and the installation at the location below. All contributions over the objective will be donated to Smith Chapel Church Ministries.
