Helping the Hernan Family with the Gift of Hearing

Penny Hernan was born on October 4, 2018 - the Hernan Family was in love with their beautiful, sweet girl. If we can ease their burden of costs associated with uncovered medical bills, and travel expenses, they will be able to focus on sweet Penny. Please read on for further details.
Shortly after she was born, the Hernan family found out that Penny has profound hearing loss. Through numerous tests, scans, and doctors appointments Joe and Katie found out that both of Penny's inner ears are severely malformed and that she is deaf. Penny's diagnosis comes with additional challenges that require a lot of attention and multiple appointments each week. Because of this, Katie has had to take a step back from her career and is now at home full-time to ensure that Penny's needs are being met.
Due to her abnormal inner ear structure, she is unable to benefit from hearing aids. However, the doctors say that she may be able to benefit from a Cochlear Implant on her right side. After many additional doctors appointments, consultations, and referrals, Joe and Katie have chosen a doctor in New York City at NYU who specializes in implanting children with abnormal and rare inner ear structures to conduct the procedure.
Penny's initial surgery will be this coming July. She will also have multiple appointments for several months after the surgery, including activation of her implant, mapping/programming, and check-ups.
The Hernans will be faced with some medical bills that insurance won't cover, and the significant costs associated with traveling to NYC several times over the next 6-8 months. For the initial surgery, they must stay close to NYU for two weeks this summer. Additionally, they expect to have monthly trips back to the doctor for the various post-op appointments for at least 6 months.
This GoFundMe is aimed at helping support the Hernans with the costs associated with traveling back and forth to New York City, lodging while in the city, uncovered medical expenses, and other various expenses that come about with the ultimate goal of giving Penny the gift of hearing.
