Help with my mom’s COVID care. McDonald’s won’t.
Donation protected
My mom Sonia has worked at McDonald’s for 18 years. Today she is fighting for her life on a ventilator in a medically induced coma, diagnosed with COVID-19. McDonald’s will not commit to pay her medical bills, so I am asking for help with the bills and our family's needs.
On Sunday, March 29th my mom felt sick and did not go into work. We talked. She said she could not afford to miss a shift. She knew how her company had treated her and her coworkers for 18 years and she knew she had to work.
So my mom went to work on Monday but she was visibly sick and shaking with fever. Her co-worker Angelica recorded a video criticizing McDonald’s for keeping my mom at work so sick. It was posted online.
On April 6th, my mom was admitted to the hospital because she couldn't breathe. She was placed in a coma and put on a ventilator. My sister called McDonald's to ask if they would pay for her COVID-19 care. They would not commit. I called McDonald's several days ago and they said they'd give her "COVID pay," but a few extra days of paid sick time will not come close to covering healthcare costs and her lost long term wages.
The only places my mom went were work and home, and at the time McDonald's wasn't practicing physical distancing. They were not offering gloves or face masks to their employees. Workers at her store have kept organizing and even went on strike for public health, but it's too late for my mom. She is fighting for her life and I don’t want her to wake up to a mountain of debt. Can you help?
All money will be used for care and supporting our family in this time of need.
