Driftless Traditional Tannery was started by Bethany Emond Storm, Brandi Bonde and Danielle Dockery out of a desire to do better.
The three women have farms or homesteads where each family lives close to their food source, and each strives to live in a healthy and respectful relationship to the land, water, soil and animals in their stewardship.
The waste and heavy chemical use of large scale agriculture and industrial tanning flies in the face of everything we believe in and work for in our lives. Feeling the disconnect between our beliefs and the limited options available to us, we struck out on our own. Driftless Traditional Tannery offers natural, chemical free hide tanning for sheep and goat farmers, bringing them beautiful, healthy, quality value-added items to their operations, while removing these gorgeous hides from the waste stream associated with animal agriculture. We also offer beautiful, naturally tanned sheepskins for Eco-conscious consumers in our online shop.
As a startup niche business, we have operated on a shoe-string budget, and have done our best to build our limited equipment from scratch. Our beautiful, ethically produced sheepskins are hand worked at every stage of the process. While we are grateful to learn all aspects of this work, and have a great appreciation for the skill and knowledge that this beautiful craft provides, doing everything by hand is extremely hard on our bodies. All of the fleshing, washing, salting, tanning, stretching, finishing and brushing takes its toll!
We are seeking funds to help us purchase dedicated equipment to make doing business easier on our bodies, allowing us to complete more hides for both farmers and retail, while still maintaining a high level of integrity in our work.
