Dear Community,

I work at a public school in San Francisco's Mission District serving immigrant youth.  THEY ARE AMAZING!  I am inspired everyday by their hard work, resilience, humor, and incredible effort.  I am blessed to have deep, reflective conversations with so many of them and genuinely learn so much just by listening.  They put so much effort forward in being here and deserve to be celebrated for their efforts in a dignified way.

This year, the senior class is struggling with funds to cover senior related expenses (i.e. prom and senior trip).  Below is an unedited testimonial drafted by a senior in the foster care system who has been working since she was 8 years old to provide food for her younger siblings.  She took the initiative upon herself and asked if I would support their fundraising efforts.  Her dream has long been to attend prom....please read below and support if you can.  [I do it for the youth!]

My school our school is a school of dreamers, since we get to this country and we step on the door of the school our dreams of becoming something, and someone better every day races up, and knowing that we put so much effort on having good grades and do really well in school makes us think and be excited of our graduation day and this includes having our prom party.

Having our Prom is a dream for most of my classmates, me and all the kids that are in 12th grade. But this year that emotion and that excitement of having our prom party is getting threatened, for the simple reason that we don’t have enough funds to pay for the thing that we need to have in our prom.  Personally since I got to 9th grade all I could think about was my prom and this is one of the things that inspired me to keep on going and going with my education some kids and I have been fighting really hard to have this.

Our school and student’s have been doing some fund raising during the school year and this has been helpful but we still don’t have enough to afford for our prom, this year like many other year’s we have been struggling with the money for the prom but we fought until the last day to have enough for it but this year has been harder.

Our senior trip is also at risk of being cancelled because of the same reason, and I don’t think that is fair for me or any of my partners to miss both of this things. Me and most of the student’s have to work really hard not just at school but also personally most of the student’s including me have to work during the night and most of the day to support our families and that is something really hard because if we work during the night and part of the day we don't have time to sleep or do our homework but even like that we are capable to be at school almost all day and work of 6 classes and we deserve some time for us some time to have fun and think in other things other than just school and work.
