Help Paula Elder Get Closer to Her Family
Donation protected
Dear donors of GoFundMe,
I am Paula Elder, a 74-year-old polio survivor since the age of 2. Initially, I relied on crutches for mobility, but for over 20 years, my wheelchair has become an integral part of my daily life, granting me independence within its limits. As I age, I find myself needing more assistance, prompting my brother Clarence to construct a guest house on his Marana property to provide me with proximity to family while maintaining my independence living.
My current living situation lacks ADA compliance, confining me to my wheelchair for 90% of my day, with the remaining 10% designated for rest. Despite the challenges of navigating life in a wheelchair, a tool I liken to a four-wheel drive, I've overcome many obstacles associated with polio. However, with age, these challenges intensify, reinforcing my desire to be close to my brother and his support.
Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover all the costs of replacing my deteriorating wheelchair, which has become increasingly unreliable, akin to an aging body experiencing wear and tear. Despite my brother's efforts, including personal loans and hands-on construction, we require additional assistance to complete the guest house project successfully along with a better wheelchair for me to get around in.
The essential needs for the guest house include a new roof due to storm damage, a porch with ramps for accessibility to outdoor appliances, two functional window AC units, an accessible refrigerator, and the crucial installation of an asphalt or chip-seal pathway from the back to the front of the property for seamless mobility.
I understand that seeking donations from unfamiliar individuals may seem daunting, but I find myself in a position where financial constraints hinder progress towards a more suitable living arrangement closer to my family. Any contribution towards our cause would be immensely appreciated, ensuring that I can reside near my loved ones and continue navigating life's challenges with their support.
Thank you for considering my story, and I extend my heartfelt gratitude for any assistance provided in helping me achieve a more accessible and comfortable living environment.
Warm regards,
Paula Elder
