It takes a village - Help Mo recover!

Donation protected
Our neighbor, community service partner, and friend Mohammed "Mo" Mbeye was the victim of a senseless drive-by shooting on Saturday night in Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn. Thankfully, his injuries are not life-threatening and he's anticipating a full recovery.

Due to medical expenses and his family needing to take time off work to support him, his friends, coaches, and neighbors have decided to put together a fundraiser to support him during the challenging months ahead.

Mo has been a positive force in all of our lives:

We've worked beside him helping to deliver food to the elderly and home-bound in his housing community during COVID.

We've been humbled by him as he's actively contributed to the Community Heroes Project in Fort Greene (link here ).

We've watched him grow and mature as a football and basketball star at his high school.

We've been inspired by him as he's used his creativity to design and launch a clothing line called We Got Game --- even getting second place in the Department of Youth and Development's Young Sharks program! (See the channel 12 news story here ).

And we've been so lucky to have him in our lives as an overall awesome guy who always has a smile and gives a helping hand.

Here's what some of his friends have to say:

From Shaquana Boykin
District Leader, District 57 Brooklyn NY

"First time I met Mohammed “Mo” Mbeye was at Ingersoll Community Center playing ball with Coach Mel, and I said I want to offer Mo an opportunity to do more than play ball and Coach introduced us. Mo has been an outstanding young adult and surprisingly we both live in NYCHA Walt Whitman. My heart goes out to all victims of senseless gun violence and especially Mo and his family. Everyone knows “Mo.” He is always smiling, willing to help, and learn. We need to protect our sons, stop the violence. Let’s hold space to process grief, put down guns, and open our ears and hearts ."

From Zac Martin
Community Director at Trellis, Community Hero Project Lead, and Justice Pastor at Recovery House of Worship

"The first text I ever got from Mohammed was something like 'Wassup Zac - This is Mohammed Mr WeGotGame himself.' Sums his personality up. He's always smiling and always hard working. Can't wait till he gets back on his feet to keep making positive change."

From Kari Litzmann
Fellow Fort Greene/Clinton Hill Mutual Aid volunteer

"I personally have been so thankful to meet young men and youth like Mo during these past few months while volunteering on Saturdays. He gives me hope for our future and I can't wait to show him that we all as neighbors who know him -- and even those who don't -- are inspired by his story and are here for him."

From "Coach Mel" Damel Carnegie
Mo's Coach, Mentor, and Fort Greene Community Hero

"When I first met Mo I saw a drive and energy that I encouraged him to put into football and community engagement projects. Since then, I've seen him flourish and want the best for him for years to come... He's like my own son."

We appreciate all the support from our community near and far!

With gratitude,
Team Mo
