On January 29, 2025, my close friend MJ went to use her SNAP/EBT benefits, only to discover that her account had been drained. The day before, she had a substantial amount in food benefits, but her card information was skimmed and stolen. New York does not reimburse stolen food benefits, leaving MJ in a difficult position as she relies on these benefits to eat.

MJ is a bright and warm person who has been a loving cat mom to Lily and a supportive friend to many. She immigrated to the US over ten years ago and is now a citizen, but has faced challenges in recent years finding stable employment in her field of education. This loss puts her in a real bind, as she depends on these benefits to feed herself and her cat.
