Help Keep Carers' Common Room Brixton Open!
Donation protected
Domiciliary care workers in the UK often work long hours, travelling from house to house with long, unpaid gaps between client visits, with few options for spaces to rest, other than spending money in a café, sometimes just to keep warm. It can also be very isolating, not having places to meet other care workers to share experiences and ask for advice, in what is a very demanding profession.
Carers' Common Room, in the heart of Brixton, is a free-to-use venue for carers to come and rest and recharge between shifts, prepare drinks and snacks, use the internet, meet other carers, and attend a variety of events.
There is no other space like this in the UK and we are using the space to build community, resource-sharing and solidarity between care workers who are often from precarious backgrounds.
We are raising money to keep CCR open until October 2023, which will help with costs such as:
- Increasing current opening times from 3 days to 5 days a week
- Regularly stocked drinks, snacks, and refreshments
- Regularly updated library of books, newspapers, and magazines
- Outreach and running events such as regular coffee mornings
- Nominal fees for volunteers to cover their expenses
- Day-to-day running costs of the space
We will also be running a series of fundraising events, such as film screenings, a supper club, and live music events, kicking off with a weekend of workshops on the first weekend of June – look out for info on all these and more on our social media!
Any donation, big or small, would be hugely appreciated to help us keep Carers' Common Room open for the care workers of Brixton and beyond. And please do share, feel free to visit us, and tell any carers you know about us!
Thank you so much,
