Help with the care of Flying-Foxes
Hi, my name is Janine, and I’m organizing this fundraiser to support the care of flying-foxes, including the Grey-headed flying-fox, a species listed as Vulnerable to extinction.
Mandi, a dedicated wildlife carer since 2002 and an experienced vet nurse, has devoted her life to rescuing and rehabilitating these incredible creatures. Her expertise in flying-fox care is widely respected, and she serves as a mentor to many in the rescue community.
In Queensland and Northern NSW, flying-foxes have been coming into care with Flying-fox Paralysis Syndrome, and the situation has also impacted lorikeets.
Mandi has been tirelessly caring for 48 Black Flying-foxes, of which an incredible 45 have survived thanks to her dedication. The care required for these flying-foxes has been both extensive and time-consuming. Mandi also has 7 orphan flying-foxes in her care which required up to 4 feeds a day.
After spending nine days assisting her, I am in awe of the remarkable work Mandi has accomplished.
As an independently licensed carer in Queensland, Mandi funds most of the care expenses herself, with occasional grants from organizations like IFAW. The costs, however, are immense.
Did you know?
Daily food needs:
Each adult flying-fox consumes nearly ½ kilo of fruit, 10g of high-protein supplement, and juice if needed. With over 70 animals in care, that’s 35 kilos (77 pounds) of fruit and 700g of protein powder daily, costing $100 per 5 kilos.
Essential Equipment:
A cool room is necessary to store the fruit, and being on tank water which needs to be purchased, running 2 - 3 loads daily of bath towels/blankets which are required for the flying-foxes adds to the expenses.
Ongoing Maintenance:
The care facilities include aviaries for creche, hospital, geriatric, and flight recovery. Supplies like food buckets, water bottles, drippers, and fruit-cutting tools are essential for daily operations.
Mandi is fortunate to have support from Ki and Gavin, who collect donated fruit and travel long distances to assist. But the financial burden remains significant.
How You Can Help
Your donation will directly support the feeding, housing, and medical care of these remarkable animals.
Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference in protecting these vulnerable species and ensuring their survival.
Thank you for your generosity and for helping us give flying-foxes a second chance at life.
