Help Brianna go to Yellowknife, NWT

Hey everyone!

My name is Brianna. I am currently in my third year at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, where I am studying Environmental Toxicology.

I am extremely fortunate to have been hired by Queen's Project on International Development (QPID) for their internship position in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. QPID is a student-run organization operating out of Queen's University since 1990. QPID strives to foster an awareness of global development, environmental and social issues that our generation faces to inspire global change.

This summer I will be working with Ecology North, an organization that was founded in 1971 in response to arsenic pollution in Yellowknife. Ecology North strives to support environmental decision making on an individual, community and regional level. Their areas of expertise include climate change solutions, waste reduction, water quality management, environmental education, and species at risk protection in northern Canada.

Why Yellowknife?

The Arctic is an incredibly important and very fragile ecosystem - and it's warming at a much faster rate than the rest of the world. The thawing and degradation of permafrost, shortening winters, longer and drier summers, shrinking sea ice, and coastal erosion are direct consequences of climate change in the north. This is impacting water quality and quantity, ecosystems and species, Indigenous cultures, and the health and well-being of residents in northern Canada. Shrinking sea ice also disrupts normal ocean circulation and creates changes in weather and climate around the globe.

Ecology North strives to raise awareness of the many environmental impacts associated with climate change, and to drive research and innovation to meet the challenges of adaptation and mitigation.

Why am I going?

Climate change is the most significant challenge facing the human race. It is not a matter of inconvenience; the consequences are painful and profound. As an intern, I am eager to work with the brilliant staff of Ecology North to tackling environmental issues that our country faces. I am aware that the decisions we make today about climate change directly impact our future. It is imperative we take action on all fronts - and I plan on being part of the solution!

Why $2,500?

Each intern is required to fundraise $2,500 as an investment to QPID. This is a small contribution in relation to the total cost of the internship, but ensures the future existence of the organization and for the opportunity of future internships. Once fundraised, QPID covers all other expenses such as transportation and accommodations.
